The codes you scan, your history, and your business-card details stay on your device and are not uploaded by us. The camera is used only to read codes. To keep the App free and reliable, it uses Google services for advertising (AdMob) and for analytics, crash reporting, remote configuration, and in-app messages (Firebase), which collect limited device and usage data as described below.
01 Overview
QR & Barcode Scanner is a QR and barcode scanner and generator for Android. This policy applies to the App distributed under the application ID barcode.qrcode.reader.scanner. It does not apply to third-party websites, apps, or networks you may reach by scanning a code.
By downloading or using the App, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
02 Data you create and store on your device
The following information is created by you and stored locally on your device (in the App’s private storage). We do not have access to it and it is not transmitted to our servers — we do not operate servers that receive it:
- Scan & creation history — the content, format, and timestamp of codes you scan or generate, including any items you star as favorites.
- Business-card profile — the name, company, job title, phone, email, website, address, and notes you optionally enter to generate your personal contact QR code.
- App settings — your preferences, such as which symbologies are enabled, scan behavior, camera options, and your chosen in-app display language.
- Saved code images — when you explicitly export a generated code, the image is written to your device’s Pictures folder and is then managed by your device, not by us.
This data remains on the device until you delete individual records, clear the App’s data, or uninstall the App. If your device has Android backup enabled, this local data may be included in your own Google account backup, governed by Google’s policies rather than ours.
03 Camera & photos
The App requests camera access to scan codes in real time. Camera frames are processed on the device to detect codes and are not stored or transmitted by us. You may also decode a code from an existing image you pick from your gallery; that image is processed on the device for decoding only.
Images you explicitly choose to save or share (for example, exporting a generated code) are handled by your device’s storage and the app you share to, according to your action.
04 Information collected automatically
Some information is collected automatically by third-party software development kits (SDKs) bundled in the App. Depending on the App version and your consent, this may include:
| Source | Examples of data | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Google ML Kit (barcode scanning) | Anonymous usage and diagnostic statistics (e.g., API calls, performance). Not the contents of the codes you scan. | To provide and improve on-device scanning. |
| Google AdMob (advertising) | Advertising ID, device information, approximate location (from IP), ad interactions. | To display ads and measure their performance. |
| Google Analytics for Firebase | App events and usage, device/OS information, a resettable app-instance identifier. | To understand which features are used and improve them. |
| Firebase Crashlytics | Crash and error reports, stack traces, device state at the time of a crash, an app-instance identifier. | To detect and fix stability problems. |
| Firebase Remote Config | A Firebase installation identifier plus basic app and device attributes, sent when the App requests its configuration. | To switch features (such as whether ads are shown) on or off without shipping an update. |
| Firebase In-App Messaging | A Firebase installation identifier, and which in-app messages were shown, dismissed, or tapped. | To show occasional informational or promotional messages inside the App and measure them. |
These services do not receive the contents of the codes you scan or create, your history, or your business-card details.
05 Advertising (Google AdMob)
The App uses Google AdMob to show advertisements. AdMob may collect and process your device’s advertising identifier, IP-based approximate location, device and network information, and data about how you interact with ads. This may be used to show personalized or non-personalized ads and to measure and prevent fraud.
Whether ads are shown at all is controlled remotely through Firebase Remote Config (section 6), so some releases or regions may show no ads. When ads are switched off, no ad request is made.
Where required by law (for example, in the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland), the App presents a consent request through a Google-certified consent management platform before serving personalized ads. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time from within the App’s settings where available.
To learn how Google uses this data, see “How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.”
06 Google Firebase services
The App uses the following Google Firebase services:
- Google Analytics for Firebase — collects aggregated usage events, device and operating-system information, and a resettable app-instance identifier, so we can see which features are actually used.
- Firebase Crashlytics — collects crash and error diagnostics, including stack traces and device state at the time of the crash.
- Firebase Remote Config — periodically requests a small configuration file so we can turn features on or off (for example, whether advertising is shown) without publishing an update. The request includes a Firebase installation identifier and basic app and device attributes.
- Firebase In-App Messaging — lets us show occasional informational or promotional messages inside the App, and records whether a message was displayed, dismissed, or tapped. Message targeting uses Analytics data and a Firebase installation identifier.
The Firebase installation identifier used by Remote Config and In-App Messaging identifies your installation of the App, not you personally. It is reset when you clear the App’s data or reinstall the App.
This information is used to improve the App’s reliability and experience. It is not used by us to identify you personally. For details, see the Firebase Privacy and Security documentation.
07 How we use information
- To provide the App’s core features — scanning, decoding, generating, and storing codes on your device.
- To display and measure advertising that helps keep the App free.
- To analyze usage trends and improve features and performance.
- To diagnose crashes and maintain stability and security.
- To enable or disable features remotely, so we can correct a problem or change behavior without requiring you to update.
- To show and measure occasional informational or promotional messages inside the App.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use.
Legal bases (EEA/UK). Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on: your consent (for personalized advertising); our legitimate interests (for analytics, crash reporting, remote configuration, in-app messages, security, and non-personalized ads); and performance of a contract (to provide the App you requested).
09 Third-party services & links
The App integrates the following third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:
- Google Play services & ML Kit — Google Privacy Policy
- Google AdMob — AdMob & privacy
- Google Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics, Remote Config, In-App Messaging) — Firebase Privacy
- Google User Messaging Platform (consent requests) — Google Privacy Policy
When you scan a code, the App may offer to open a link, connect to a Wi-Fi network, start an email or message, add a contact, or perform a similar action. Any website, network, or service you reach in this way is operated by a third party and governed by its own terms and privacy policy, not this one. Please exercise caution with content from codes you do not trust.
10 Your choices & rights
Advertising controls
- Reset or delete your advertising ID: Android Settings → Privacy → Ads (wording varies by device).
- Personalized ads: where a consent prompt is shown, you may decline or later change your choice; you may still see non-personalized ads.
Your local data
- Delete individual records, or clear the whole history except your favorites, from within the App.
- Clear the App’s storage or uninstall the App to remove all locally stored data from your device. This also resets the Firebase installation identifier described in section 6.
Analytics and in-app messages
- Clearing the App’s data resets the app-instance and installation identifiers, which breaks the link to previously collected analytics and messaging data.
- Uninstalling the App stops all collection described in sections 4 to 6.
Statutory rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the California CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your personal information, and to object to certain processing. Because scan content and profile data are stored only on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly by managing or deleting data in the App. For data processed by the services above, you may also contact us using the details in section 17.
11 Data retention
Data stored on your device is retained until you delete it or uninstall the App. Data processed by Google (advertising, analytics, crash reporting) is retained according to Google’s own retention policies.
12 Security
Your locally stored data resides in the App’s private storage area, which other apps cannot access under normal Android conditions. We use reasonable measures to protect information, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure. Keeping your device’s operating system and screen lock up to date helps protect your data.
13 Children’s privacy
The App is a general-audience utility and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
14 International data transfers
The third-party services above are operated by Google and may process data on servers located in countries other than yours, including the United States. Where required, such transfers are governed by appropriate safeguards under the relevant service provider’s terms.
15 Permissions the App uses
- Camera — to scan codes in real time. Optional; you can still decode codes from saved images.
- Vibrate — to provide haptic feedback on a successful scan.
- Storage (write) — on Android 9 and older only, to save a generated code image to your Pictures folder when you ask for it. Newer Android versions do not require this permission.
- Advertising ID — to support advertising and analytics as described in sections 5 and 6.
The App requests no network permission of its own; internet access is provided to the Google SDKs described above through standard Google Play services.
16 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, when we enable a new service or to reflect legal changes. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice within the App or on this page. Your continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
Language. This policy is published in English, and the English text governs. The App’s interface is available in other languages; any translation of this policy is provided for convenience only.
What changed on July 29, 2026. Google AdMob and Firebase are no longer described as “upcoming” — they ship in the current release. We added Firebase Remote Config and Firebase In-App Messaging, listed the storage permission used on Android 9 and older, and noted that advertising can be switched off remotely.
